5 Tips to Help You to Glow During Pregnancy and Nursing

Here in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro, the hot summer air is causing havoc.  Dry skin is common at this time of year so we would like to share some tips to help prevent dry, flaky, cracked skin. If you are pregnant or nursing, the summer heat may be even more challenging! These trendy tips will help you to make your skin glow! In particular, the tips below are ones that I personally use during pregnancy and nursing where I minimize my exposure to beauty products that are absorbed by my skin and may be passed to my baby.

1. Avoid hot water and use moisturizing body wash
While a "hot" bath or shower during the cold winter months may be tempting, the hot water has a negative effect that dries your skin out. Instead, use warm water. You will also want to use a body wash that is not pumped full of chemicals. I used the EWG website to look up the safety of body washes. I started using this website many years ago because my grandmother passed away from cancer and it made me reflect on the fact that our skin is our largest organ and our body absorbs products that we apply to our skin. During pregnancy and nursing, I have been extra sensitive in minimizing the beauty products that I use.  For the very few that I do use, like body wash, I look the products up on this website first.

2. Stay hydrated
This is such a simple tip, but I know that many of you trendy moms are so busy during the day that you often forget to drink enough water.  Make it  a priority to stay hydrated for a week and watch the difference in your skin.  While you will notice a difference in your skin, it is also good for your entire body!

3. Use a humidifier
Turn your bedroom into an oasis and pamper your skin by sleeping with a humidifier. Personally,  I live in the Dallas metro where we have a dry climate. When I use a humidifier, my skin soaks the moist air up and it feels great!  In addition, many women suffer from sinus problems during pregnancy.  I used to be stuffy and have occasional nose bleeds, but using a humidifier has solved these problems for me.   Plus, as a bonus, many pediatrician recommend a humidifier for babies, so it's an item that you may need for your baby in addition to yourself.   Personally, when my husband and I were brand new parents, we thought that our son had developed a mild cold and visited his pediatrician.  His pediatrician told us that he did not have a cold and that he simply needed a humidifier.  We were skeptical, but within two days, our son was perfectly fine. His pediatrician was correct!

There are many different humidifiers out there.  We tried a couple before finding the perfect humidifier.  The first one was an inexpensive one from Target that had a replaceable filter.  This ended up being gross to maintain because the filter would eventually have a weird combination of orange buildup and mold on it.  We went through filters frequently and then decided to switch to a filterless model.  Our next humidifier was a travel humidifier without a filter. While it was easier to maintain, it was too small for our needs. It didn't do much.   Finally, we went with the Crane White Drop Cool Mist Humidifier.  These are the special features of this trendy humidifier:

  • Ultrasonic Cool Mist increases air moisture for easier breathing and a good night’s sleep

  • Relieves cough, cold, and flu symptoms, nasal congestion, dry cough, sinus irritation, nose bleeds, and dry skin and hair
  • Clean Control Antimicrobial Material in the Base is proven to help reduce mold and bacteria growth up to 99.96%*
  • Removable 1 gallon tank easily fits under most bathroom sinks

  • Runs whisper quiet up to 24 hours
  • Auto-Off function activates when water tank is empty
  • More energy efficient than a household light bulb – up to 45W
  • Does not require a filter

  • 1 year manufacturer’s warranty
This is our perfect humidifier that we love!!  It's the best of everything -- very effective and easy to maintain.  It's quiet enough to let me sleep and has an auto-off function if the tank is empty.

4. Use sunscreen
Exposed skin will still suffer from sun damage regardless of the temperature.  Even if you live in an area with snow, the snow glare may even increase your exposure. Be sure to wear a good sunblock that protects your skin from harmful UV rays.  I generally use a baby sunblock and look up the safety information for specific sunscreens on the website that I mentioned earlier.

5. Moisturize
My skin is normally dry and pregnancy has made it worse since I stopped using my rich moisturizer that I typically use when I am not pregnant. I have tried a few different pregnancy brand moisturizers and found one that works well for my face. However, for my stomach, I bought an organic coconut oil for cooking.  It may seem strange, but it works for me.  In combination with the tips above, especially staying hydrated and using a humidifier, I've been able to get by with these options as moisturizers.
