(Win it!) 10 Cleaning Tips for the Holidays

Cleaning Tips for the Holidays

I recently came across the infographic above and it inspired me to give our cleaning routine a makeover. I love the picture of the house with the cleaning supplies to use in the different rooms and that many of the supplies make it easier to clean quickly.  We ordered several of the items from this list and cleaned our house from top to bottom. Our house now sparkles and we are ready for guests!  Let me share some tips that we found helpful.

1. Update your cleaning closet supplies.

We updated our cleaning closet with new cleaning supplies and it made a big difference.  Our old mops, dusters, sponges, and brooms had seen better days. Basic cleaning supplies are not as fun to shop for as new clothing or home decor, so it's easy to overlook updating your cleaning supplies.  However, after updating our cleaning supplies at one time, we realized that we should do this more often.  The new cleaning supplies that we ordered are more effective and make it easier to make our floors, counters, and other areas sparkle. For instance, this is our list of new cleaning supplies for holiday cleaning:
  • Mr. Clean Breeze Mop
  • Mr. Clean Dust & Mop
  • Mr. Clean Cobweb Duster
  • Mr. Clean Heavy Duty Scrubber Sponges
  • Mr. Clean Double Bucket
  • Clorox 2-in-1 Tile & Grout Brush (x2)
  • Butler Static Duster
  • Gain Popup Hamper
  • Black + Decker Combo Squeegee Washer
  • Black + Decker Step-On-It Dustpan
  • Dawn Elite Gloves
  • Dawn Scrubtastic Sponges
  • Evercare Belle Vie Lint Rollers
  • Evercare Sweater Cleaning Stone

2. Hold 10 minute cleaning challenges.
If you have young children like us, it's difficult to spend an entire morning cleaning.  We make it more fun and tolerable by having 10 minute cleaning challenges. We each select something that we will clean for 10 minutes.  This is a tolerable time limit for little ones to help out and adds up quickly, especially if you have a few people cleaning at the same time!

3. Update laundry bins.
How old are your laundry baskets or bins?  It's nice to update these once in a while, especially since there are trendy lightweight bins that look better than laundry baskets. For instance, we use the Gain Popup Hamper that is lightweight and zips shuts. It even has a handle.  We keep one of these in our children's closets for their dirty laundry.  It's then easy for me to pick up the lightweight hampers from each of their rooms to carry to/from the laundry room.  Plus, they come in my son's favorite color - green!

4. Pick focus areas.
I'm the first to admit that spending an entire weekend cleaning is not fun.  We pick focus areas such as the kitchen, a particular bathroom, floors, windows, etc.  We set a goal to deep clean one focus area  per week.  This works well for us.  We clean from top to bottom. The Butler Static Duster is great for taking a final pass over the area.

5. Touchup winter clothing.
We recently pulled winter clothing out from the back of our closets.  We put everything through the washer and dryer for the new season and then worked on ironing and removing lint and fuzz. The sweaters and fleece items needed special care. We used the Evercare Belle Vie Lint Rollers and Evercare Sweater Cleaning Stone shown below. The link roller is fantastic and is easy enough for our 6-year old to use on his own clothes. We also used the cleaning stone on sweaters.

6. Clean the indoor and outdoor fans.
We often overlook cleaning our fans in winter. However, this is prime time for dust to accumulate.  We use the Mr. Clean Cobweb Duster and the Butler Static Duster to clean our fans.

7. Clean the floors regularly.
We have hardwood floors and spend a few minutes cleaning them each day. It's quick and easy to take a pass using the Mr. Clean Dust & Mop.  (Our children are young, so we often find crumbs or other debris which is why we use it daily.)  We also use the Mr. Clean Breeze Mop for deeper cleaning each week.  These make it quick and easy to clean the floors.

8. Don't forget about windows.
Here in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro, this is a good time to clean windows because it isn't too cold outside.  We use the Black + Decker Combo Squeegee Washer with the Mr. Clean Double Bucket. It's really cool because one side of the lack + Decker Combo Squeegee Washer has a microfiber cloth and the other side has the squeegee. The Mr. Clean Double Bucket is a generous size and is easy to carry.

9. Clean the bathroom tiles and grout.
One of my pet peeves is a dirty bathroom floor.  We clean our floors regularly with the Mr. Clean Dust & Mop to remove debris. We also use a steam cleaner to further sanitize our floors and shower.  Something that we don't do often enough is to clean the grout and reseal it.  We recently found that it is easier to clean the bathroom grout with the Clorox 2-in-1 Tile & Grout Brush.  This brush has two sides and makes it easy to clean the grout.  We have two so that my husband and I are able to quickly conquer our bathroom floors and shower!  We also use the Mr. Clean Heavy Duty Scrubber Sponges while we clean the grout to scrub away mildew and hard water buildup.

10. Clean humidifiers, hair dryers, toothbrush chargers and other devices.
We use Dawn Elite Gloves and Dawn Scrubtastic Sponges to go around the house to gently clean small appliances and other items.  Our biggest trouble spots are electric toothbrushes and chargers. My family members often place wet toothbrushes on their charges and create a buildup that is gross, but easy to clean with a damp sponge.  Once the Dawn Elite Gloves are on though, the messes do not intimidate me! I simply wear my gloves and use the Dawn Scrubtastic Sponges to wipe everything down!

We hope that you enjoy some of our tips to keep your house clean during the holidays.  This is a great time to freshen your cleaning supplies and to make sure that you have the best cleaning products to make it easy to clean your home from top to bottom!
