Skincare Tips for Age 40

Skincare Tips for Age 40
I've tried many different products over the years, but age 40 has hit me with new challenges.  My skin has always been dry, but now it is extremely dry. I've also noticed fine lines, sun spots, and a few of those little red dots that are called cherry angiomas.  These issues have been creeping up on me. I had a moment last month where I realized that I needed a new skincare routine because my skin is aging. In today's post, I'll share tips of things that have been helpful to me in my quest for more beautiful skin.

1. Visit a dermatologist.

My first stop was to my dermatologist. I visit every year for an annual skin cancer check. However, on my most recent, we also discussed my aging skin and how I feel sad to see the fine lines, sun spots, and cherry angiomas.  Your dermatologist is well trained to discuss these problems and should have personalized suggestions for your aging skin.  Personally, I moved forward with IPL (photo facial) treatments and new anti-aging skincare products. (I'll tell you about the specific products shortly.)

2. Eat nutritional foods and drink plenty of water.
Beauty really does come from within.  In this case, you should eat a nutritious diet and drink plenty of water to help your skin to glow.  Avoid sugar and refined foods. Monitor the amount of water that you drink to make sure that you are hydrated.

3. Consider laser treatments if recommended by a board certified dermatologist.

Your dermatologist may recommend a laser treatment.  The type of laser treatment will vary based on the amount of damage and your goals. Personally, I am going through IPL (photo facial) treatments. My first treatment was last month and it worked really to even my skin tone and fade sunspots. My doctor warned me ahead of time that some of the spots would darken and then flake off.  I stayed home for the first few days because it looked bad. However, just as my doctor told me, my skin continued to look better each day. The first treatment was a success for me. I plan to have two to four more treatments in the future.

4. Use anti-aging skincare products.
There are so many anti-aging skincare products out there. It's overwhelming!  Personally, I ask friends for recommendations and then research reviews online to narrow down the products that I want to try. Some are not great while others are amazing for my skin.  One of my favorite anti-aging skincare products that worked really well on my skin is the DCL G20 Radiance Peel.  This is an at-home facial peel.

In my personal experience, this worked well on my skin.  I actually saw results in the first few days. My skin looked brighter and smoother. Their one-step pads deliver both chemical and physical exfoliation to optimize cell renewal.  It worked so well that my husband noticed and started "borrowing" some of my G20 pads as well.  He was also happy with the results on his skin.  It's really interesting because we have different skin types (his skin is oilier) and were both happy.

5. Use strong SPF protection.

My doctor warned me that she would only give me the IPL treatments if I promised to use strong sun protection.  She said that IPL would make my skin sensitive to the sun.  Plus, regardless of whether you are having IPL or not, it's a good practice to protect your skin from the sun.  As a Texan, I have to take this concern seriously! I used the DCL Super Sheer Sunscreen with SPF 50. Yes, that is SPF 50 protection!  This product is really nice because it absorbs into my skin and I'm still able to flawlessly apply my layer of makeup over this sunscreen.

6. Moisturize.
My skin has always been dry and I have always applied moisturizer twice daily. It is disappointing that my skin has become even drier with age.  At the same time, the IPL and anti-aging products temporarily add sensitivity to my skin which is a second challenge.  There are a few things that I am doing. First, I use two products in my daily routine - DCL Ultra-Comfort Cream and DCL Hydra Boost Finishing Serum.  My skin soaks up the Ultra-Comfort Cream and it feels good. It's my go-to moisturizer to soothe my skin.  The Hydra Boost Finishing Serum also gives me some relief and makes my skin feel smoother.  The combination of these two products work really well for me as I need to address my issues of dry and sensitive skin.

Second, I use the DCL Hydrating Treatment Mask twice per week.  A little goes a long way with this product. My skin instantly feels better as soon as I apply this mask.  I leave it on for approximately ten minutes and then rinse it off. It is such a treat for my skin.

7. Get your beauty rest.
Make sure that you get a full night of sleep to help your skin to glow.

I hope that my tips are helpful. I know that it's scary to realize that your skin is aging. However, taking it seriously and addressing concerns is sure to make you feel better.
