Tips for Coping with a Newborn Sleep Schedule #StreamTeam

My baby slept through the night.  He. Slept. Through. The. Night. (Happy dance!) The past 8 months are a blur as I was sleep deprived and felt like I was barely keeping my head above water.  I think that my baby was the cutest newborn in the history of the world, but his sleep schedule pushed me to my limits. I felt like a zombie. I probably looked like one too.  In today's post, I don't have a magical solution for helping your baby to sleep on your schedule, but I have some tips to make life easier during the 4th trimester sleep deprivation craziness.

Tips for Coping with a Newborn Sleep Schedule

1. Netflix at 2am. Netflix at 4am. Netflix at 9am. Netflix at anytime.
If I didn't know any better, I would think that Netflix was invented by a mom who wanted a better quality of life after giving birth.  There is no need to be bored at 3am while trying to rock a baby to sleep when you are able to turn on the tv and watch anything that you want through Netflix.  I don't know what pre-Netflix-era moms did back in the day, but Netflix improved the quality of my life when I needed it most. Netflix gave me a way to relax whenever my baby allowed me to relax. I didn't have to worry about being awake at 8pm on Tuesday, 10pm on Thursday, or some other day/time when I wanted to relax and watch a special show.  Instead, I turned on Netflix and watched anything that I wanted at any moment to relax while I fed or rocked my baby.  Actually, my baby sleeps through the night on most evenings now, but he still has nights when he wakes up and just wants me to rock him.  My good friend, Netflix, keeps me company.  Right now, I am watching the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt!  If you haven't tried Netflix yet, let me tell you that it is worth the $7.99 to $11.99/month (based on the plan that you choose).  Try it free for a month here and then decide if it is a lifesaver for you too!

2. Buy 4th Trimester Clothing.
It took a while for me to fit back into my pre-pregnancy clothing.  Actually, I still have 3.5 pounds left to lose. Who is counting though, right?  Personally, I love cozy yoga pants and soft t-shirts that don't press on my c-section area.  Take the time to go shopping and buy new clothing to enjoy after your baby is born.  It's a nice feeling to wake up and have something that is comfortable to wear.

3. Don't forget to eat.
I often found myself so busy and tired that I didn't eat enough. I had to really focus on eating, especially since I was breastfeeding my baby.  My husband was a big help in this area as he encouraged me to eat several small meals and snacks throughout the day. He would make a large batch of food and split it into smaller containers for me. It was really helpful to have food in small containers to eat later without prep work.  I also bought bottles of chocolate coconut water to add some extra nutrition and calories to my diet.

Finally, you should remember that this phase will pass.  Some babies sleep through the night at 3 months or older.  There is always a chance that today is the special day that they will finally start to sleep through the night!   Hang in there!
