Tips for Exercising with a Toddler from an Iron Man Dad & a Casual Exercise Mom

The holidays are just around the corner which means that we have extra time to spend with family and friends.  At the same time, many of us worry about gaining weight thanks to the tempting foods that we encounter at holiday parties or in decadent gift baskets that we receive as gifts. In today's post, I'll share some tips that my husband and I use to help maintain our exercise routines with our toddler, especially during the holidays.

1. Stretch together.
Take the time to do daily stretching exercises.  Personally, this is a happy time of day for me because my little one either watches me, stretches with me, or climbs on me. I've learned to work him into my stretches!

2. Speed clean.
Work out while doing 10-minute speed cleaning sprees. My husband and I try to complete one or two 10-minute cleaning sprees each day. These involve picking up toys, dusting furniture and baseboards, vacuuming, and anything else that requires moving around.  It's a win-win to clean and burn calories.

2. Walk, jog, or run with your baby.
Our toddler has been going through growth spurts and teething.  It's rough, but getting outside for walks and runs has been amazing for all of us.  My baby is entertained by the outdoor scenery while I enjoy a workout.  (Actually, sometimes the only solution to soothe his fussiness is to go outside for a walk!)   Of course, in order to get outside and exercise with your baby, a good quality jogging stroller is a necessity!   My husband is an avid runner and has several friends from running groups that strongly recommend BOB strollers.  In our research, this seems to be the favorite brand for many serious runners that need a good quality stroller that they will use for many miles. Of course, many trendy moms love this stroller too. Let me share a quick overview of the features:
  • Hand-activated, rear drum brakes for the best downhill control.
  • Swiveling-locking front wheel swivels to maneuver tight turns with ease or locks forward for increased stability when jogging or on rough terrain.
  • Adjustable padded handlebar offers 9 positions to create the perfect fit for parents of all heights.
  • State-of-the-art adjustable suspension system offers 3 inches of travel and 2 stages of weight support for an ultra-smooth ride.
  • Easy, two-step fold for convenient transportation and storage.
  • Travel system ready when using the BOB Infant Car Seat Adapter (sold separately). Pair with a matching BOB B-Safe 35 Infant Car Seat by Britax or with any other major brand car seat.
  • Air-filled tires on high-impact polymer wheels make for a smooth ride whether on-road or off-road.
  • One-hand recline adjustment lets you quickly lay the seat back with the simple squeeze of a button.
  • Fully upright seating position so your child can see the world on all your adventures.
  • Ultra-padded seat with ventilation and a five-point harness keeps your child comfortable and secure.
  • Extra-large Low Boy Cargo Basket provides 15% more storage space so you can take everything you need when you’re on the go.
  • Integrated pockets store snacks, drinks and other necessities.
  • Extra-large UPF 50+ canopy shields your child from sun and weather. Includes a large viewing window so you can keep a watchful eye.
  • Enhanced quick-release design makes it easy to securely attach both the front and back wheels.
  • Easy-remove wheels allow the stroller to become more compact for easy storage in tight spaces.
  • Adjustable front wheel tracking helps correct alignment with a simple twist of the knob.
  • Foot-activated parking brake secures stroller in the stopped position.
  • Wrist strap provides safety while running and includes a buckle to lock the stroller closed when folded.
  • Renowned quality and performance make BOB the #1 Jogging Stroller.

One of my favorite things about this stroller is that it makes my husband happy and that it is easy to adjust for both of us to take turns using it.  My husband runs daily to train for marathons, so the BOB Revolution Pro Stroller is perfect for him.  I also love to go on shorter runs and walks, so it's great for me too.  The side view below shows it adjusted for my husband. You'll also noticed that we bought the cupholder. We really like that it not only holds drinks, but also has an enclosure that zips for our phones and keys.

The stroller offers an amazingly smooth ride with air-filled tires on high-impact polymer wheels. It works really well on-road or off-road.  The stroller is highly adjustable for both our baby and the parent or caregiver. The seat adjust to keep him cozy.

The stroller includes a generous sized UPF 50+ canopy provides shade. The canopy even has a large viewing window.  My husband runs 1 to 2 hours/day on most days of the week, so the canopy gives extra flexibility on the times that he is able to take our toddler on a run.

It was also important to have adjustable front wheel tracking for alignment purposes. Of course, the wrist strap and hand-activated rear drum brakes are important, especially for the best downhill control. Finally, we have found it easy to fold/unfold the stroller for convenient transportation and storage.  This stroller is an important part of my son's childhood because my husband takes him on daily runs. This BOB Stroller is excellent quality and perfect for parents that want to maintain an active lifestyle with their young children.

Check out our son on a run this morning where we stopped to play Peek-a-Boo!

There is something about being outside that puts him into a silly mood.

We have been training with this stroller for a short while and will use it at a Turkey Trot on Thursday. Our entire family is looking forward to it!

We hope that you enjoyed our tips and that they inspire you to develop a good exercise routine with your toddler.  Our exercise routines that integrate our toddler are not only good for our health, but also create many happy memories and allow us to serve as healthy role models to our children.
