Tips for How to Create an Essential Wardrobe (Capsule Wardrobe or Minimal Wardrobe) #activeeverywhere #prAnaSpring18

It's time for spring cleaning and renewal! If you follow regularly, you know that I recently completed a 30 Day Decluttering Challenge. I spent a minimum of 15 minutes each day on decluttering tasks. I carefully identified items that we could live without and gave them to family, friends, and charities. It was an amazing experience that came at the perfect time in my life when my children had outgrown many items, my clothing style changed as I finally lost most of my baby weight (and am now done having babies), and our schedules and interests changed. It felt like a weight was lifted as we could now focus more on experiences instead of stuff. This transformation has resulted in many changes for us. In today's post, I'll focus on my fashion transformation and share tips for creating an Essential Wardrobe, aka a Capsule Wardrobe or Minimal Wardrobe. I'll share some examples of my favorite basics in my personal wardrobe for an active and versatile lifestyle.

The idea behind an Essential Wardrobe is that you want a largeer set of clothing and accessories that provides mix-and-match flexibility so that it's always easy to find something to wear in the morning without sifting through a large wardrobe of clothing that wastes your time and money.   I'm sure that you are able to relate to decision fatigue and mornings when you feel like you have nothing to wear.  With an Essential Wardrobe, life is easier because you spend time in advance to identify your personal basics and plan outfits that are easy to wakeup and grab in the morning.

Everyone's Essential Wardrobe will vary based on personal style preferences, but let me share some tips for helping you to get started.

1. Declutter your closet.

The first step is to declutter your closet by getting rid of excess clothing. I kept clothing that I loved and had my husband review my maybe pile for help. I offered some of the clothing to family and friends. I then donated the rest to a local charity for women.

2. Select your essential items.

Selecting your essential items is the challenging part because it involves more than simply going shopping to find new clothing and accessories. You actually want to plan future outfits for different scenarios.  Personally, I looked through my closet to identify my favorite items.  I then looked at my calendar and thought about the different styles that I would wear to work, at home, and at various activities. I thought about this for a couple of weeks and then identified items that would work well for my daily life.  Here are some essential wardrobe basics to consider:
  • Jeans
  • Black pants
  • Black skirt
  • Fitted t-shirts in solid colors
  • Blouses for work
  • Blazer or jacket
  • Shirts for casual activities
  • Jacket for casual activities
  • Scarf
  • Sunglasses
  • Purse
  • Flats
  • Heels
  • Athletic shoes
Another important thing to consider is the quality of the items that you purchase.  It takes serious effort to create an Essential Wardrobe, so do yourself a favor and buy good quality items that you won't have to replace quickly.

3. Look for examples.
Look to your favorite brand websites, friends, and magazines for examples of stylish items that will work with your personal style and goals.  Let me share an example. One of my favorite brands in prAna.  I looked to their spring collection for inspiration and found a couple of items that fit well into my Essential Wardrobe. These include the Pillar Pant and Ostara Top.

The main reason that I chose the Pillar Pant is that this straight leg pant in an essential color (black) and the pants are easy to mix and match with a variety of items. Plus, I wanted a perfect version of this type of basic black pants since it's part of my Essential Wardrobe. The designers at prAna paid close attention to detail on these fitted midrise pants, including Chakara compression stretch jersey with moss face finish, a wide waistband with hidden key pocket, back leg seams for shaping, flatlock construction, and a triangle gusset for comfort and reinforcement. Their yoga pants are guaranteed to be non-see through. That makes them easy to wear anywhere -- from running errands to doing downward dog in a yoga class! The pants are excellent quality, look great on me, and are comfortable.  They are a perfect fit for my Essential Wardrobe because I seem to always want to wear them in the morning!  I typically pull them out on days that I have casual activities.

The Ostara Top has been a good fit for my Essential Wardrobe because it is flattering and comfortable. This relaxed fit is fashionable with the long sleeve boatneck top, drop shoulder seams, flatfell seams, and lace up placket detail with embroidered eyelets.  As a bonus, it is UPF 50+ which is perfect for moms like me that often spend time outside with children.

If you are at a phase where you need to minimize stuff and focus on experiences with your family, then an Essential Wardrobe will help to simplify your life.  You'll want good quality basics that make it easy to quickly select outfits for your different activities.  If you want to learn more about the example essentials that we featured, visit prAna's website hereOur readers will score 15% off of any non-sale prAna items ordered through the website during 3/6/18 to 4/6/18 with the code AEDBS18.
