6 Tips for Buying a Baby Mattress for a Crib and Toddler BedIn today's post, we'll share tips to consider when purchasing a baby mattress. We will also share information about the baby mattress that we personally own and use in our son's toddler bed - the Air-X Performance Crib and Toddler Mattress!
1. Do not reuse crib mattresses.
There are multiple reasons for not reusing crib mattresses. The first reason is that some studies link used mattresses to higher incidents of SIDS. A second reason is that the previous baby may have vomited, peed, or pooped and there may be bacteria in the mattress if it was not carefully protected. Another reason is that the crib mattress may not have been stored properly and there may potentially be fungus in it. This is one area that I do not feel it is worth trying to cut costs.
2. Don't skimp with air mattresses.
Avoid air mattresses since they often have some give to them which may put a baby at risk for SIDS. You want a firm surface that is not a suffocation hazard.
3. Go a mattress that has good airflow and is easier to wash.
Many babies have sensitive skin and need a clean environment. As a Boy Mom, I have cleaned up many accidents such as diaper leakage, accidents during potty training, vomit, or accidental spills. There have been more messes than I want to remember. The Air-X Performance Crib and Toddler Mattress has a removable, washable inner layer that is engineered with the patented Air-X technology to enhance airflow and provide a comfortable sleep surface for your baby. The waterproof barrier protects the core for a clean and healthy sleep environment. These features make life so much easier!
4. Make sure that the mattress fits.
You do not want extra space between the crib frame and mattress. This is actually such a huge deal that law requires that full size mattresses for cribs must be at least 27 1/4" x 51 5/8" and no greater than 6" thick. The baby mattress that we use meets this criteria.
5. Go for quality and consider that you may use this mattress for both a crib and toddler bed.
When your baby comes home as a newborn, you will find that they probably sleep more than anything else. Both of my children would sleep, eat, and repeat all day and night. Their crib mattresses were a big part of their lives. Personally, we currently use the Air-X Performance Crib and Toddler Mattress for my youngest son. This trendy mattress is really nice because it is excellent quality for different phases of growth. One side, designed for infants, is firm and supportive, while the other is soft and adaptive for toddlers, giving your child the support they need, when they need it. Many parents may not realize that a crib mattress may be used for several years! When my son was a newborn, we got a crib that transitioned into a toddler bed. When he was 14 months old, he started trying to climb out of his crib. We were afraid that our little climber would get hurt, so we transitioned him to the toddler bed. He is now 5-years old and will probably use his toddler bed for one to two more years. We really like that the toddler bed has sides that prevent him from accidentally rolling out of bed. It's best to buy a high quality crib mattress when they are born so that will last for many years. The MSRP for this crib mattress is $299.99.
6. Look for a good warranty.
Research whether the mattress comes with a warranty. For instance, the mattress that we have comes with an excellent warranty. I love that this brand stands behind their products.
A crib and toddler bed mattress is an important purchase since it provides a foundation for your child's sleep. As a parent, nothing is better than a sleeping baby or preschooler. I love knowing that my son has good support from his mattress. I appreciate that this mattress grows with children, has good airflow, and nice protective covers. It was important for me to find an excellent quality mattress to last for his childhood.
