Tips for Choosing Whiskey for a Gift

Do you have someone on your holiday shopping list that would love the gift of whiskey? Similar to many other husbands and dads, my husband requested whiskey for Christmas.  In my search for the perfect gift, I uncovered a lot of information about how to buy whiskey for a gift recipient. In today's post, I'll share my tips.  (Spoiler alert - My husband received his gift early and was thrilled! This gave me the confidence to share my whiskey shopping tips with you!)

1. Know the trends - Irish Whiskey is popular this year!

I think that there is something to be said for a gift that has some thought behind it. We learned that Irish Whiskey is inherently intertwined with American culture. In North America, it is the highest revenue contributor to the ultra high-growth Irish Whiskey category. It’s evident that Irish Whiskey is popular, so it's nice to have this knowledge to share when someone opens the gift! Personally, we love The Busker Irish Whiskey as a holiday gift or for holiday parties! The Busker whiskeys give an ode to the Irish who first brought whiskey into the new world while forging their way West from the coast. The Busker honors its heritage, but goes beyond the limitations and lines of history to write a new story, just as the pioneers did in the 19th century.

2. Choose the category of whiskey.

Whiskey comes in blended, single malt, or pure malt varieties. The single malt and pure malt varieties are often considered more pure, but sometimes you can't beat the taste of an expertly mixed blended whiskey! For instance, we love The Busker's Triple Cask Triple Smooth (SRP: $24.99) because it blends all three of their iconic whiskeys for a combination that is full of the traditional taste that Ireland has to offer.

3. Splurge on a collection!

We love a good gift theme and variety. If your budget allows, splurge on a variety of whiskeys for your gift recipient to enjoy the different notes. For instance, we went with four varieties from The Busker Whiskey collection:

  • Single Malt (SRP $29.99): Sweet, creamy, and velvety-smooth

  • Single Grain (SRP $29.99): Oaky with notes of vanilla

  • Single Pot Still (SRP $29.99): Rich, spicy and peppery

  • Triple Cask Triple Smooth (SRP: $24.99): A blend of all three; a combination of the full traditional taste that Ireland has to offer.

You'll notice that each variety has unique features that make it fun for your gift recipient to sample.

4. Narrow your options based on your budget and then look for good reviews.

Whiskey comes in a variety of price ranges. You'll want to identify your price range and then search for reviews.  Personally, we found that The Busker Whiskey falls into a sweet spot in terms of price, quality, taste, and reputation.  We love that it's affordable at $24.99 to $29.99 bottle and has excellent reviews. We've sampled the products ourselves and definitely agree with the excellent reviews of their Irish Whiskeys!

We hope that these tips help!  My husband's Christmas wishlist item was good whiskey. I hope that my research saves you time if you have a whiskey lover on your holiday shopping list too! Who doesn't love a gift that is popular and has a good story behind it that it comes from Ireland?!
